It’s important to act quickly after a flood since fungi, mold and other disease-causing bacteria thrive in a water-logged environment.

Hazardous Bacteria after a Flood

Mold isn’t the only threat from flooding. Sewage can contaminate flooded areas which can lead to various dangerous skin and gastrointestinal infections, and water damage itself can lead to pathogenic bacteria that’s not related to sewage contamination.

The key in a flooding situation is to act fast. The faster you act, the more you can save. The longer water damage is left unattended, the more dangerous areas will become as bacteria and mold begin festering and multiplying.

How to Clean and Sanitize after a Flood

  • Contaminated mud – shovel out as much mud as you can, and then use a hose to wash it away from hard surfaces.
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces – scrub surfaces down with hot water and heavy-duty cleaner; then go a step further and disinfect with a solution of water and chlorine bleach.
  • Ceilings and walls – remove wallboard, plaster and paneling. If these have been soaked by contaminated water in the flood, they can be a major health hazard and should be completely removed.
  • Heating and cooling systems and ducts – should be inspected and cleaned. Insulation that has been soaked will need replacing.
  • Wooden floors and carpets – should be completely removed.

Infections Caused by Fungi

  • Superficial infections – affect the skin and mucous membranes.
  • Systemic infections – occur when the fungi and airborne pollutants get into the bloodstream and cause more serious diseases.
  • Opportunistic infections – attack people with weakened immune systems.
